Find your way into Bridge End Garden
Bridge End Garden is tucked behind the streets on the north side of the centre, with entrances from Castle Street and Bridge Street. Its linked Victorian garden rooms offer formal planting, quiet corners and a hedge maze. The maze and walled garden have their own opening arrangements, so check the garden’s visitor page if those are the reason for your trip.
Try the turf maze on the Common
The Common gives you a broad stretch of open space close to the shops. Its turf maze is laid out in the grass, quite different from Bridge End’s hedge maze. It makes a good short detour with children or a place to pause between the town centre and a longer walk.
Pair the museum with the castle grounds
Saffron Walden Museum stands beside the remains of Walden Castle. The collections bring together local archaeology, social history, natural history and objects from further afield. It is a useful first stop for understanding the town before returning to the streets you have just walked through.
Look for art off Castle Street
Fry Art Gallery holds work by artists connected with north-west Essex, including Edward Bawden and Eric Ravilious. The small gallery rewards an unhurried visit and fits naturally with a walk through Bridge End Garden. Check the current exhibition and seasonal opening dates before setting out.
Make an Audley End day of it
Audley End House and Gardens combines grand rooms, the service wing and landscaped grounds. The Enchanted Railway is a separate attraction nearby, with miniature train rides and family activities. Choose the visit that suits your group and check each operator’s own booking information; a ticket to one does not cover the other.
Stay for music or a film
Saffron Hall hosts concerts and performances on the County High School site, and Saffron Screen brings cinema to the same part of town. Look at the programme before deciding where to eat and when to travel: an evening here can feel quite different from a market-day visit.
